Abstract

The book “Bauman Sosyolojisinde Kader –Bir Kader Sosyolojisi Denemesi- (Fate in Bauman's Sociology – An Essay in the Sociology of Fate), written by Ümit Harun Akkaya, stems from the idea that the concept of fate has not received sufficient attention within the field of the sociology of religion. This work offers a concrete example of a sociological perspective on the concept of fate, approached through the intellectual framework of Zygmunt Bauman. The aim of this study is to critically examine Akkaya’s work in terms of its contributions to the academic literature. Employing qualitative research methods, the book not only undertakes a conceptual analysis of the notion of fate but also delves into the meanings it acquires within Bauman’s intellectual world. Furthermore, it elucidates the position of the concept of fate in Bauman’s thought in relation to the individual and society. In his work, the author also addresses the relevance of the concept of fate to various specific issues within Bauman's sociology. While shedding light on Bauman’s intellectual framework regarding the concept, the author offers a significant perspective by drawing attention to the concept’s lesser-known dimensions and its associations beyond conventional meanings and conceptual relationships. Ultimately, it can be stated that the book, by relating the concept of fate to various events and phenomena, possesses the potential to serve as a valuable reference for future studies on the subject.
