Ethical Principles

Publication Ethics

Publication ethics can be defined as self-regulatory mechanisms that advocate for high editorial standards and principles of integrity on behalf of authors, reviewers, and publishers. These ethical standards aim to ensure the production of high-quality scientific publications, maintain public trust in scientific findings, and uphold the reliability of academic ideas.

  • Researchers must avoid plagiarism in their research processes. All original contributions and ideas should be explicitly stated.
  • Sources must be cited accurately and completely, and any incorrect or misleading citation practices should be avoided.
  • Contrary viewpoints should be addressed objectively and fairly, with respect shown to views that contradict existing data and findings.
  • Data should be presented with scientific accuracy and transparency, without any manipulation, concealment, or misdirection.

Peer-reviewed studies support and apply the scientific method. In this context, it is crucial for all stakeholders involved in the publication process (authors, readers, researchers, publishers, reviewers, and editors) to adhere to ethical principles. Dorlion Journal is committed to adhering strictly to research and publication ethics standards both nationally and internationally.

Our journal complies fully with the Press Law of the Republic of Turkey, the Law on Intellectual and Artistic Works, and the Guidelines on Scientific Research and Publication Ethics of Higher Education Institutions. Additionally, Dorlion Journal adopts international best practices in research and publication ethics, conforming to the International Ethical Publishing Principles set forth by the Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE), Directory of Open Access Journals (DOAJ), Open Access Scholarly Publishers Association (OASPA), and World Association of Medical Editors (WAME). These principles ensure transparency, reliability, and high scientific standards in all stages of our publication process. Each article published is meticulously evaluated for adherence to these ethical standards, thereby supporting our mission to provide trustworthy and high-quality scientific information to the academic community.

Duplicate Publication

Duplicate publication refers to the situation where the same article or articles with substantially similar content are published in multiple journals. This can jeopardize scientific integrity and originality and is considered unacceptable according to ethical standards. Articles considered duplicate publications by Dorlion Journal will be returned to the author without review by the editor.

To prevent such cases, the editor may take the following measures:

  1. Embargo Implementation: Authors attempting to resubmit a duplicate publication may face an embargo for a specified period. During this embargo, the author may be restricted from submitting the same or similar content to other journals.
  2. Public Disclosure: The duplicate publication status may be disclosed to the public, possibly concurrently with the editor of the initial journal. This announcement aims to reduce the risk of duplicate publication in other journals.
  3. Combined Measures: All the above measures can be implemented together. This approach ensures a comprehensive handling of duplicate publication issues and strengthens academic ethical standards.

These measures aim to protect the scientific quality and ethical standards of our journal. Decisions regarding duplicate publication are implemented with transparency and fair assessment processes and are managed meticulously to ensure academic credibility.

Simultaneous Submission to Multiple Journals

Authors should not submit the same manuscript to multiple journals simultaneously. Simultaneous submission is unacceptable from a scientific ethical standpoint and can adversely affect the publication process. Dorlion Journal implements the following measures to prevent simultaneous submissions and uphold ethical standards:

  1. Consultation Rights: If the editor discovers that a manuscript has been simultaneously submitted to other journals, the editor reserves the right to consult with the other editors. This consultation process facilitates coordination and information sharing between journals.
  2. Return and Rejection: If simultaneous submission is detected, the editor may return the manuscript without review. Alternatively, the manuscript may be rejected without consideration of the review process. Rejection decisions are made in accordance with the journal's publication policies and ethical standards.
  3. Discussion with Other Editors: The editor may discuss the simultaneous submission issue with other relevant editors to make a decision. This provides a broader editorial evaluation and supports a consensus decision.
  4. Restrictions on Submissions: If simultaneous submission is detected, the editor may decide not to accept manuscript submissions from the authors for a specified period. This is a preventative measure against repeated ethical violations.
  5. Notification to Employers: If necessary, the authors' employers may be informed of the situation. This step aims to ensure authors adhere to academic ethical standards.
  6. Combined Measures: All the above measures can be applied together. This approach addresses all potential issues related to simultaneous submission comprehensively and strengthens ethical standards.

These measures aim to protect the scientific integrity and ethical standards of our journal. Decisions related to simultaneous submission are made and implemented within the framework of transparency and fair evaluation.

Plagiarism Prevention Controls

Plagiarism involves presenting others' ideas, methods, data, writings, figures, or works, partially or wholly, as one’s own without appropriate scientific attribution. Such behavior seriously jeopardizes scientific integrity and academic ethical standards.

At Dorlion Journal, to prevent plagiarism and ethical violations, submitted manuscripts are thoroughly screened using plagiarism detection software (e.g., iThenticate, Turnitin, or plagiarism.net). Similarity reports are carefully reviewed by the editor to assess whether citation practices are appropriately followed.

Editors will return manuscripts to authors for correction if they detect unethical practices that do not comply with academic writing standards. This process is conducted to maintain the journal's scientific standards and ethical rules.

Plagiarism and other ethical violations include:

  • Duplication (Duplicate Publication): Publication of the same work or substantially similar content in multiple journals.
  • Fake Authorship or Denied Authorship: Inclusion of individuals who did not make a genuine contribution or exclusion of contributors' names.
  • Research/Data Fabrication: Fabrication or alteration of research data.
  • Fragmentation: Division of a work into multiple smaller parts and publication of these parts separately.
  • Copyright Violation: Unauthorized use of materials under copyright by others.
  • Conflict of Interest Concealment: Failure to disclose potential conflicts of interest related to the research funding or authors' interests.

Such unethical behavior is contrary to the accepted ethical standards of our journal and, therefore, results in withdrawal from publication. All publications in our journal are continuously monitored for compliance with these standards, including post-publication detection of ethical violations or discrepancies, and corrective measures are taken as necessary.

Dorlion Journal is committed to maintaining high ethical standards to ensure the transparency and reliability of scientific research. By adhering to ethical rules at every stage, we aim to maintain academic trust and contribute to scientific knowledge.

Fabrication

Fabrication involves using and presenting false or falsified data in the research process and results. This violates the fundamental principles of scientific research and undermines both the validity of the research and the trust of the academic community.

Fabrication encompasses:

  • Generating False Data: Producing data that is not based on research or fabricating data and reporting or publishing results based on this data.
  • Data Falsification: Altering, modifying, or falsifying presented or published work based on false data.
  • Presenting Unconducted Research as Conducted: Reporting or publishing research that was not actually conducted as if it had been done.
  • Falsifying Research Records: Deliberate alteration or falsification of records and data used in the research process.
  • Using False Methods or Materials: Presenting methods, devices, or materials not actually used in the research as if they were.
  • Data Manipulation: Not considering data that does not fit the research hypothesis, manipulating data and results to align with existing theories or assumptions.
  • Distorting Research Results: Altering or shaping research results to fit the interests of supported individuals or institutions.

Dorlion Journal adopts a zero-tolerance policy towards fabrication and other unethical behaviors. When fabrication is detected, the manuscript is withdrawn from the journal, and necessary disciplinary measures are taken against the author(s). Any instances of fabrication encountered during the publication process are addressed meticulously following the journal's ethical standards, and corrective actions are implemented as required.

These measures are conducted to maintain the accuracy and reliability of scientific research and are crucial for ensuring credibility within the academic community. Dorlion Journal is committed to providing transparent and reliable scientific information by adhering to high ethical standards.

Protection of Participants' Personal Data

Dorlion Journal prioritizes the protection of personal or sensitive data related to human participants in research. In this context, our journal mandates that all research involving non-public personal or sensitive data undergo official ethical review processes.

Dorlion Journal's personal data protection policy is based on the following principles:

  1. Ethical Review Requirement: Research involving personal or sensitive data about human participants must receive approval from official ethics committees before publication. This process ensures the protection of participants' rights and the security of data.
  2. Confidentiality and Security: Research must implement all necessary privacy and security measures to protect participants' personal data. Data should only be used for research purposes and protected against unauthorized access.
  3. Informed Consent: In research processes, informed consent must be obtained from participants. Participants should be given clear and understandable information about how their data will be used and protected.
  4. Data Storage and Disposal: Participants' personal data should be stored only for the necessary duration and used for research purposes. After the research is completed, data should be securely disposed of.
  5. Transparency and Accountability: Researchers are required to comply with personal data protection policies. In case of any data breaches, the journal and relevant ethics committees must be informed, and corrective actions must be taken.

These policies are designed to meet Dorlion Journal's ethical standards and legal requirements, aiming to protect the rights and safety of participants. Our journal works diligently to ensure that research is conducted in compliance with ethical and legal standards and takes necessary measures if these standards are not met.

Addressing Research Misconduct Allegations

The Dorlion Journal adheres strictly to the Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE) "Ethical Toolkit for Successful Editorial Practice" to maintain high ethical standards in publishing. Our journal takes all allegations of research misconduct, including plagiarism, citation manipulation, data falsification, data fabrication, and other forms of misconduct, very seriously and implements necessary measures to prevent such violations.

The procedures followed by Dorlion Journal in addressing research misconduct allegations are as follows:

  1. Assessment of Allegations: Editors carefully evaluate allegations of research misconduct in submitted manuscripts. The validity and accuracy of these allegations are meticulously examined, and additional information or clarification may be requested from relevant parties if needed.
  2. Measures and Actions: If allegations are confirmed to be accurate, editors will take appropriate measures to prevent the publication of the manuscript. These measures may include retracting or correcting the manuscript.
  3. Compliance with COPE Guidelines: Editors adhere to COPE's guidelines and ethical standards when confronted with any allegations of research misconduct. These guidelines ensure that allegations are addressed objectively and that a fair assessment process is maintained.
  4. Transparency and Fair Review: The processes related to research misconduct allegations are conducted transparently. Relevant parties are informed about any review processes or decisions, and all steps are carried out fairly.
  5. Editorial Team's Responsibility: Editors of Dorlion Journal do not knowingly permit such ethical violations and maintain a vigilant oversight to ensure compliance with ethical standards.

These policies ensure that Dorlion Journal remains committed to scientific and ethical standards and maintains the integrity of academic publishing. All allegations of research misconduct are addressed in accordance with the journal’s ethical principles, and corrective measures are implemented as necessary.

Dorlion Journal is committed to thoroughly evaluating readers' reports and taking necessary corrective actions swiftly and effectively. Corrections, Retractions, and Expressions of Concern

Errors identified in articles published in Dorlion Journal are addressed meticulously to uphold the journal’s scientific standards and academic integrity. Editors will take appropriate corrective actions in the following situations:

  1. Correction: For minor errors in published articles that do not affect findings, interpretations, or conclusions, editors may consider publishing a correction. Corrections are made to enhance the accuracy of the article and provide correct information to readers.
  2. Retraction: If significant errors or ethical violations invalidate the findings and conclusions of a published article, editors should consider retracting the article. Retraction is a method used when the scientific validity of the article is compromised, and it is applied to maintain the journal's scientific integrity.
  3. Expression of Concern: If there is a possibility of research or publication misuse and evidence suggests that the findings are unreliable, or if there are concerns that the authors' affiliated institution has not adequately investigated the matter, editors may consider publishing an expression of concern. This statement is made to maintain the transparency and reliability of the research.

Decisions regarding corrections, retractions, and expressions of concern are made in accordance with COPE (Committee on Publication Ethics) and ICMJE (International Committee of Medical Journal Editors) guidelines. These guidelines ensure that editors act in accordance with scientific and ethical standards and conduct a fair and transparent process in all cases.

These procedures aim to protect the journal’s academic quality and reliability and ensure adherence to the ethical standards of scientific publishing.

Publication of Survey and Interview-Based Studies

Dorlion Journal adheres to the principles outlined in COPE’s "Code of Conduct and Best Practice Guidelines for Journal Editors" and "Code of Conduct for Journal Publishers" to ensure the ethical standards of scientific research. Accordingly, the following ethical requirements and procedures apply to survey and interview-based studies submitted to our journal:

  1. Ethics Committee Approval:
    • Requirement for Ethical Approval: All survey and interview-based research must be approved by an ethics committee. Researchers are required to obtain the necessary approval from the relevant ethics committees for such research. The ethics approval certificate should be appropriately indicated within the manuscript and submitted along with the required documents.
    • Documentation: The ethics committee approval should be clearly stated in the methods section of the manuscript, including details such as the name of the approving institution, approval date, and approval number. Additionally, this information should be included on the first or last page of the manuscript.
  2. Informed Consent and Voluntary Participation:
    • Informed Consent: For research requiring ethics committee approval, informed consent must be obtained from all participants. Participants should be provided with detailed information about the research process, objectives, potential risks, and benefits, and their consent should be obtained freely.
    • Consent Form: Information regarding the signing of informed consent forms by voluntary participants should be clearly stated in the manuscript. This information should be included in the methods section and/or on the first or last page of the manuscript.
  3. Confidentiality and Data Protection:
    • Protection of Personal Data: Personal data obtained during the research process should be kept confidential and used only for research purposes. Participants' personal information should be protected according to data protection laws and not shared with third parties.
    • Anonymity: If possible, participants' identities should be anonymized. This helps in the impartial evaluation of research results and protects participants' privacy.
  4. Transparency and Disclosure:
    • Disclosure: Transparent information about all research processes and methodologies used should be provided. This ensures the repeatability and scientific validity of the research.
    • Publication Policies: Research findings should be presented clearly and accurately to avoid any misunderstandings or manipulation.

These procedures are part of Dorlion Journal’s commitment to maintaining high ethical standards in scientific publishing and academic integrity. Adherence to these rules supports the journal’s reliability and scientific quality.

Editorial Confidentiality

Editors of Dorlion Journal treat all submitted manuscripts as confidential documents and protect all related information with strict confidentiality. Sharing information about manuscripts with third parties without the authors' permission is strictly prohibited.

During the manuscript review process, access to manuscripts is restricted to the following individuals:

  • Editors: Individuals responsible for the initial assessment and editorial processes.
  • Reviewers: Experts evaluating the scientific validity and quality of the manuscript.
  • Publication Board Members: Individuals overseeing the overall publication process and contributing to manuscript decisions.

The only situation where details about a manuscript may be shared with third parties is when there is a serious suspicion of research misconduct. In such cases, information will be shared only to the extent necessary for evaluating the alleged misconduct within the confidentiality principles.

Maintaining high ethical standards in the editorial process is a priority for Dorlion Journal, and editors are expected to ensure confidentiality and reliability throughout all processes. This responsibility supports both the protection of authors' rights and the reliability of scientific research.

Complaints Procedure

This procedure regulates the handling of complaints related to the content, processes, or policies of Dorlion Journal or its editorial team. Complaints are viewed as an opportunity to improve processes and services, and thus, there is a commitment to respond promptly, respectfully, and constructively.

  1. Submitting Complaints:
    • Complaints should pertain to the content, procedures, or policies of Dorlion Journal. Complaints must be sent via email to dorlionjournal@gmail.com. Submitted complaints will be handled confidentially and securely.
    • Upon receipt of complaints, editors are responsible for providing an immediate response and following the procedures outlined in the COPE (Committee on Publication Ethics) flowchart.
  2. Review and Resolution of Complaints:
    • If the initial response is deemed insufficient, the complainant may request that their complaint be escalated to a more senior member of the journal.
    • If the complainant is not satisfied with the initial review, the complaint may be escalated to the Chief Editor.
    • Complaints are aimed to be resolved with a full and detailed response within four weeks, if possible.
  3. COPE and Other Recourse:
    • COPE (Committee on Publication Ethics) publishes a code of conduct for journal editors. This code aims to facilitate the resolution of disputes between journals and authors. However, this recourse should only be used after the journal's own complaints procedures have been exhausted.

This procedure is designed to ensure that Dorlion Journal handles complaints in a fair and systematic manner. Effective management of complaints aims to enhance the journal’s reliability and transparency.

Appeals Process

Dorlion Journal considers and welcomes serious appeals regarding assessments made by editors and reviewers. If authors believe their manuscript was rejected due to a misunderstanding of the scientific content, they may submit their appeal to the editorial team via dorlionjournal@gmail.com. At this stage, it is not necessary to submit a revised version of the manuscript.

The appeals process consists of the following steps:

  1. Submitting the Appeal:
    • The appeal letter should be written as detailed and clearly as possible. Only one appeal per manuscript will be considered. Therefore, clarity and comprehensibility of the appeal are crucial.
    • The appeal letter will be reviewed by the editors and the Publication Board. If the appeal is deemed justified, authors will be informed to submit a revised version of the manuscript for further external review.
  2. Review of the Appeal:
    • The acceptance of the appeal does not guarantee the acceptance of the manuscript. Appeals will be reviewed objectively based on scientific and ethical standards, and authors will be notified of the decision.
    • If the appeal is deemed unjustified, the original decision will stand.
  3. Final Decision:
    • Once the review of the appeal is complete, the final decision regarding the manuscript will be communicated to the authors. The decision is made with respect to the journal's policies and standards.

The appeal process ensures transparency and fairness, enabling authors to seek reconsideration if they believe an error or oversight occurred during the initial review process. This contributes to maintaining the high academic standards and quality of Dorlion Journal.

Conflict of Interest

A conflict of interest refers to situations where a person's professional judgment could be influenced by secondary interests, such as financial gain or personal competition, that may conflict with their primary interests. To ensure the reliability and transparency of scientific research and publications, it is crucial for authors and researchers to explicitly disclose such conflicts. The policies followed by Dorlion Journal regarding conflicts of interest are as follows:

  1. Definition and Disclosure of Conflict of Interest:
    • Definition: A conflict of interest refers to financial or other interests that could significantly impact the objectivity of a person's work or provide an unfair advantage to a specific individual, group, or organization. The effects of financial support and sponsorships received at all stages of the research process—from design through execution to reporting—must be transparently disclosed.
    • Disclosure: If no financial support is received, this should also be stated in the manuscript. Examples of potential conflicts of interest include consulting fees, salaries, research grants, and other financial support. Personal conflicts of interest should be disclosed as early as possible.
  2. Conflicts of Interest for Editors and Editorial Board Members:
    • Dorlion Journal has established procedures to ensure impartiality. Editors, reviewers, and editorial board members carefully handle submissions to manage conflicts of interest and, if necessary, redirect them to other journals. If redirection is not possible, the individual's role in the journal may be suspended. Submissions will be evaluated through a double-blind review process.
    • Editors should not have decision-making authority over manuscripts written by themselves or their family members. Such manuscripts must adhere to all standard procedures of the journal. Editors, authors, and reviewers must disclose potential conflicts of interest according to the guidelines of the ICMJE (International Committee of Medical Journal Editors).
  3. Management and Transparency of Conflicts of Interest:
    • Accurate disclosure of conflicts of interest enhances the transparency and reliability of scientific publishing. Dorlion Journal ensures that all relevant parties explicitly disclose their conflicts of interest and that these disclosures are considered in the review process.
    • Effective management of conflicts of interest throughout the publication process contributes to maintaining the journal's scientific standards and strengthening the trust of the research community in the journal.

These approaches aim to maintain high ethical standards and publication quality at Dorlion Journal, as well as to reinforce trust and fairness within the scientific community.
