Özet

This article examines how entrenched patterns of thought narrow and veil human perception and inner understanding through a comparative, text-based reading of Jalāl al-Dīn Rūmī’s Mathnawī and G. I. Gurdjieff’s Fourth Way teaching. It focuses on the ways in which, in these two traditions, inner perception is veiled by habits of thought shaped by the nafs and by mechanical mental reactions, as well as on the conceptual and practical frameworks through which this veiling is diagnosed and sought to be overcome. The analysis is based on relevant passages from the Mathnawī and Gurdjieff’s own writings. The Mathnawī is read in light of classical commentaries and key works in the Tasawwuf (Sufism) tradition, while the Fourth Way is examined together with the systematic accounts of P. D. Ouspensky and Maurice Nicoll. In the Mathnawī, the metaphors of the thorn, the colored glass, and the guesthouse are analyzed; in the Fourth Way, the concepts of mechanicality, imagination, identification, buffers, self-observation, and self-remembering are examined. The article argues that the two traditions display certain methodological affinities in diagnosing the veiling of perception, yet differ markedly in their understanding of awakening, the sources on which they rely, and their ultimate aims.
